Cupcakes galore at Coco and Company

PERRY -- Cupcake shops seem to be popping up on every corner and now there is a shop in Perry specializing in the dessert.

At Coco and Company, each day there are different flavors, from the candy bar to the fruity.

About a dozen people helped me taste test multiple flavors on different days.

On the positive side, the favorites seemed to be the wedding cake and the Reese.

The wedding cake is very light, similar to a spongy angel cake, while the frosting was not overpowering.

One of my taste-testers said the topping had a cotton candy flavor.

The Reese was peanut butter goodness. The peanut butter frosting was quite a hit with everyone who tried it. Another one of my volunteers said the cupcakes were “excellent.”

The appearance of the cupcakes was just elegant enough. Some were decorated with the flavor, like the Rolo and Reese, others had sprinkles or syrup.

I also tried the key lime, cookie dough and red velvet.

Most disappointing was the red velvet. Though the color was a rich red, the flavor was bland and there was not a hint of chocolate. The cream cheese frosting was done right, but was overpowering without the flavor of the cake to go with it.

Since I’ve reviewed a few other cupcake places around Middle Georgia, it seems fair to compare Coco to the others.

The cake was more dense than some of the ones I had previously tried. The frosting was definitely different in that it was more of a traditional frosting than some of the over-the-top, piled high cupcakes I have had.

I was impressed with the fact that the cupcakes seemed to retain their moisture and flavor even two days after I bought them. I used plastic wrap and air-tight containers to store them.

Inside the store there are a few tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the cupcakes. It is decorated with bright green and pink.

Like most of the places specializing in cupcakes, the prices were high. For two dozen cupcakes it was $53.50.
