Name: Tae Jung
Business name: Gem Cleaners, 3330 Vineville Ave., Macon, (478) 474-1129.
How long have you been in business? Gem Cleaners was established in 1947 by James Tyler, former baseball player. In the early 70s, his son, Earl Tyler, relocated the store to Vineville Avenue. ... Five years ago, he decided to hand over Gem Cleaners to me, Jung stated in an e-mail.
Jung has 10 years of dry cleaning experience in California, Nevada and Maryland.
Whats your specialty? Gem cleaners has updated its cleaning system, from petroleum cleaning, Perc cleaning, hydrocarbon cleaning, to professional wet cleaning, Jung said. Perc solvent is still prevailing in dry cleaning business despite of its environmental problem, because it needs big investment to convert from perc to other systems.
Because of the issues with perc solvent, Jung said many cleaners have switched to hydrocarbon and more green Earth-friendly solvents. However, these solvents are weak in cleaning capacity, and have environmental or health problems too, Jung said.
Gem Cleaners uses a process called wet cleaning developed in 1992 by German company Miele International.
Miele developed new machines and new detergent to protect garments from these problems (color bleeding and shrinkage) by controlling agitation, residual moisture, pH level, temperature. ... This new system ... is fresher, brighter, healthier than any other cleaning system, Jung said.
