The newness hasnt yet worn off at Barberitos in Macon, a burrito joint across the street from The Shoppes at River Crossing.
The restaurant seems to stay fairly busy, especially at lunch. Whether that is a testament to the food or the novelty of a new restaurant remains to be seen, though Barberitos is a solid addition to the other established burrito shops in the midstate.
Expect much of the same at Barberitos. You stand in line, order at the counter and instruct the burrito-maker along the way.
You have four options of tortillas -- flour, spinach, chipotle or wheat; two options of beans -- black or pinto; and five options of protein -- char-grilled chicken, spicy chicken, char-grilled steak, ground beef or tofu.
With the tacos and burritos you have three basic options -- Skinny, Fatty or Heavy D. A Skinny is rice, beans, protein, cheese, salsa and lettuce. A Fatty adds sour cream or guacamole and a Heavy D adds both. Then, of course, you can add a myriad of other toppings, including fresh or pickled jalapenos, cilantro, olives and mushrooms.
There are also quesadillas, salads, nachos and fajitas, as well as vegetarian options and some other specialty items, such as the jerk fish tacos only available on Fridays.
Meals come with chips, and there is a salsa bar.
Overall, the food was good. My main complaints are that the chips were too thin -- they often broke off in the salsa or cheese dip -- and the salsa was bland. Although there was a spicy sauce, there was no spicy salsa, and what was offered just tasted like crushed up tomatoes and not much else.
Employees were friendly. However, service was a little slow, and sometimes the employees had to look up what was in a particular item.
I attribute most of that to the restaurant being new, and Im sure theyll become more accustomed to the menu with time.
