Eastman woman dies in Sunday morning house fire

Published: May 13, 2012

An Eastman woman died from injuries sustained in a fire early Sunday morning, Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith said.

Smith said Joyce Paul, 67, was pronounced dead at a hospital after firemen managed to get her out of her home, which was on fire.

Smith said Paul’s son, Greg Purvis, was asleep on the couch at the house when he smelled smoke at about 12:30 a.m. He tried to get to his mother’s bedroom, but flames made it impossible to go down the hallway.

Smith said Purvis then ran out of the house and tried to get into his mother’s bedroom through the window, but was unable to until fire units arrived.

Purvis sustained minor cuts to his hands and arms, Smith said.

Paul’s body will be sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy. The Eastman Fire Department and the Georgia Office of Insurance and Fire Safety are investigating the cause of the fire, Smith said.
