Bibb County hotel owner kidnapped, robbed

A 27-year-old man from India was arrested by Bibb County sheriff’s deputies on charges of kidnapping a local hotel owner and stealing his van Thursday morning.

At about 10:32 a.m., Frezer Fernandez confronted Berket Sanjy, owner of Villager Lodge at 5009 Harrison Road, according to a sheriff’s news release. After demanding money from Sanjy and pepper-spraying him, Fernandez is accused of forcing Sanjy into his Toyota Sienna van and driving to State Bank & Trust at 4699 Log Cabin Drive. At the bank, Fernandez told Sanjy to get an undisclosed amount of money and come back to the van, officials said in the release. Fernandez eventually left the parking lot in Sanjy’s van after Sanjy went inside the bank, and tellers called 911, the release stated.

Bibb County sheriff’s deputies arrested Fernandez at Dixie Cleaners at 3175 Pio Nono Ave. on charges of criminal attempt to commit robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and auto theft.

Because of the aggravated assault and kidnapping charges, Fernandez is being held without bond at the Bibb County jail.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with information about the case to call (478) 746-9441.
