Grab your girls and head to ‘Girls Night’ at the Grand Opera House

Published: March 23, 2012

“Girls Night: the Musical” brings laughter and fun into a telling glimpse of the lives of five friends in their 30s and 40s as they go out on the town for a wild night. Set in a karaoke bar, the music of the show is meant to blend seamlessly into the story, creating a toe-tapping and backside shaking reaction that has thrilled audiences all over the country since the show premiered.

Betsy Fitzgerald, executive director of the Grand Opera House, promises attendees a fantastic night when “Girls Night” hits the stage in Macon on Friday and Saturday.

‘‘ ‘Girls Night’ is a show that so many women can relate to. It’s a show about girlfriends and those relationships that help us, as women, make it through our lives, in the good times and the bad, with laughs and sadness all rolled together. It’s kind of cheesy, but that really is what makes good friends, you know,” she said.

The show features women who have been friends since they were teenagers. According to a news release, “the five main characters have all had their fair share of heartache and tragedy, joy and success. Among them are Carol the party girl, blunt Anita who tells it like it is, Liza with her marital issues, boring Kate the designated driver and Sharon, the not-so-angelic angel who just couldn’t resist tagging along.”

“It’s a show that proves the common bond between girlfriends,” Fitzgerald said. “We are supportive of each other in the good times and bad. Hopefully, this show just proves that the good times outweigh and outnumber the bad by a considerable amount. Even when they don’t, this show helps prove that sometimes a good laugh and a cocktail make things better.”

Featuring familiar songs such as “I Will Survive,” “Lady Marmalade,” “It’s Raining Men,” “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” the show proves that sometimes a karaoke bar is the perfect place to just hang out with friends. The cast “reminisce about their younger days, celebrate their current lives and look to the future,” all while singing songs that will make the audience want to sing along, the release stated.

“This is a perfect show for women of all ages to grab their friends and come see,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s completely filled with amazing music that are truly just girl anthems. In fact, it’s hard not to want to get up and dance, which is why we encourage people to do just that. Get into the aisles and dance. Laugh and cry. Enjoy each other’s company. This is the perfect sort of show for that kind of night. I also want to encourage friends to enjoy Macon’s nightlife. There are some amazing restaurants for dinner pre-show and post-show cocktails.”

“Women will recognize these characters in their own lives,” Fitzgerald said. “With any luck, they’ll be sitting next to you as you laugh your rear ends off. Grab your girls, make plans and get ready to party!”
