Hart, Reichert plan to push Macon Miracle

The TelegraphMarch 13, 2012

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and Bibb County Commission Chairman Sam Hart said Tuesday they’ll work to implement the school system’s Macon Miracle plan.

Hart and Reichert spoke at a press conference about the idea of working with the Macon Transit Authority to get transportation options for students to go to charter schools.

Reichert said he’s interested in having the Macon Police Department handle security and truancy for the school system across the county.

Also speaking at a Tuesday press conference were Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority Chairman Cliffard Whitby and NewTown Macon CEO Mike Ford. Both of them said the county’s troubled school system is hurting the community.

Whitby told The Telegraph that some potential employers don’t give Bibb County a second look.

“We know and we’ve been told that our education system disqualify us in many ways,” he said.
