Meeting about uranium, radon contamination set for Thursday in Juliette

Posted: 12:00am on Feb 10, 2012

The Monroe County cooperative extension will hold a public meeting Thursday in Juliette about uranium and radon contamination in wells and air within the home.

Topics will include water and air testing, a community health survey being conducted by state health officials in the Juliette area and the progress of efforts to extend county water lines to residents with high uranium or radon levels in their water, said Dana Lynch, Monroe County cooperative extension agent.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Rum Creek Banquet Hall at the intersection of Ga. 87 and Ga. 18.

Uranium occurs in some rocks and soils of Georgia’s Piedmont region, and it can break down into radon. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, digesting uranium can cause kidney dysfunction, and breathing radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. To learn more about the meeting or uranium and radon testing, call Lynch at 994-7014.
