Bivins running for re-election to Bibb County Commission

Bibb County Commissioner Bert Bivins launched his re-election campaign Thursday, saying he wants to make sure Bibb County’s new $190 million sales tax is properly managed.

Bivins, 69, plans to run again as a Democrat in Bibb County’s District 2, which represents much of south Bibb County. Bivins said he’ll continue to look for ways to save money in places such as energy-efficiency lighting or encouraging the county to purchase smaller cars when appropriate.

But in a brief news conference in the Bibb County Courthouse, Bivins focused on the county’s new special purpose local option sales tax.

Bivins said the county government needs to ensure the SPLOST money is spent appropriately. The SPLOST won’t cover all the infrastructure needs, and voters need to know the county did what it promised before they’d consider another one, Bivins said.

Bivins took office in 1995, succeeding William P. “Bill” Randall after Randall’s death.
