Tyler Perry ‘dramedy’ draws serious laughs

SPECIAL TO THE TELEGRAPH Tyler Perry’s “The Have and the Have Nots” comes to the Macon Coliseum on Wednesday.

Tyler Perry’s “The Have and the Have Nots,” according to actor Palmer Williams Jr., “is a play about two different families and the choices they’ve made.”

While Perry is known for his comedic style of storytelling, Williams said that this play, coming to Macon on Wednesday, is about reality.

“The Have Nots are dealing in a situation where an older couple allows their adult daughter, her husband and her teenage son to move in with them. They’ve lost their home in a foreclosure and that is going to ring very true to people in today’s economy,” said Williams. “The son-in-law lost the home when he took the equity out of it to fund his business flipping houses. Now, they’re trying to save the grandmother’s home because she invested in the son-in-law’s business as well. This play is very much about the dilemma of homelessness.”

The daughter has a job as a maid in the home of the Haves, where her character comes into contact with Williams, who plays the butler.

“The Haves family consists of a wealthy man and his second wife, whom he suspects of cheating on him -- like his first wife did. He is dealing with the fact that although he may have more than enough money, he’s not sure he has love. His doubts and insecurities are a contrast to the son-in-law, who is struggling to figure out his worth as a man who cannot provide for his family. It’s about pride,” he said.

Although the subject matter is serious, Williams promises that the play is rife with humor. “It’s definitely a dramedy. There is a lot of comedy distributed throughout. My character is a meddler and gets on both families’ nerves. The grandmother’s character is also funny throughout, but every character has a moment when they are funny, despite still being real and present in their problems,” he said.

For Williams, the play is mostly about hope.

“This is a show that looks at life and sees all the possible happy endings. It proves that even when you look around and only see negatives, you have to have faith that God is setting up bigger blessings,” Williams said.

The cast is looking forward to coming to Macon.

“Macon is one of the most responsive and supportive cities we go to,” Williams said. “We love it. It has become an absolute must stop for most urban theater groups, although that doesn’t mean that the audience won’t tell you if you’re (bad). It’s just a place that is so giving back to us on stage that we really want to give the audience everything we have.”
