Hang onto your hats folks. The already jam-packed February entertainment calendar gets even fuller beginning Friday night. In fact, youd almost need to take the week off from work to do justice to the next nine days in the midstate.
Joining The Foreigner (now entering its final weekend at Macon Little Theatre) are the Warner Robins Little Theatre production of the comedy Any Body Home? and the Backlot Players production of the thriller The Spiral Staircase.
By next weekend, still more shows will have opened, including Theatre Macons Purlie Victorious and Mercer Universitys The Colored Museum.
The news of this latter show is exciting. Written by the celebrated George C. Wolfe, The Colored Museum is a series of 11 satiric vignettes, several of which were highly disturbing in 1986. It will be interesting to see how the play stands the test of time. The Mercer production runs through Feb. 26, but since the Backdoor Theatres seating is limited, reservations will be essential for this show.
In between these two weekends we also have Rock of Ages and Of Mice and Men, both at the Grand Opera House, and Tyler Perrys The Haves and the Have Nots at the Macon Coliseum.
Counting The Wedding Singer at Georgia College & State University, we have at least nine shows tempting us in the next week or so, with more to come later in the month.
Music, too
As I trust every music lover within 100 miles knows by now, Macon-born violinist Robert McDuffie will be presenting a recital Saturday evening in Mercers Fickling Hall. McDuffie appears in Macon so frequently that we often take this international star for granted. Yet, it is in large measure through his good works that our city now attracts talented string faculty from all over the U.S. and students eager to study with them. While many stars forget from whence they came, McDuffie is the polar opposite.
Maga Film Festival
If you have never attended a Macon Film Festival, you have been missing out on an event that put some big teeth in the slogan Its Hotter Here. Maga, as it is sometimes called, is now in its seventh year, and if the Feb. 16-19 event is anything like previous ones, newcomers will be amazed. Visit www.maconfilmfestival.com for more information.
