Perry police arrested two people Monday for the illegal sale of alcohol.

Grover Jackson and Carolyn Jones McCants were charged with sale of alcoholic beverage without a license after police and the Houston County Sheriff’s Office carried out a search warrant at 1210 Oldfield Lane in Perry.

The arrests stemmed from an undercover operation after police received numerous complaints about the establishment, Perry Police Capt. Heath Dykes said.

The “neighborhood bar” of sorts was operated in a structure built beside the home, but Jackson does not have a city business license, Dykes said.

Jackson was arrested in 2010 for the same charge, as well as selling alcohol on Sunday and selling within 100 yards of a church, Dykes said.

Jackson recently pleaded out on those state charges, he said.

“After he pleaded out, we continued to get complaints and did another operation where we were able to find out he was selling alcohol again,” Dykes said.

Both Jackson, 63, and McCants, 44, had bonded out by Wednesday, Dykes said.

Jackson also was charged with maintaining a disorderly house in the Monday arrest. Dykes said the building was under construction with wires hanging from the ceiling, leading the fire chief to deem the structure unsafe and pull the electrical meter.

“Right now he’s out of commission, building-wise anyway, until they get back in order,” Dykes said.

Police confiscated more than 300 bottles of liquor and 300 cans of beer, along with money from the building.

Dykes said illegal sale of alcohol is not something Perry police deal with often, especially since local governments legalized the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

“That was a problem then with people running shine houses on Sundays,” he said.

However, with these establishments come other issues, such as fights breaking out, disorderly conduct, loud music and people having weapons pulled on them, he said.
