Four Houston Schools honored

Four Houston County schools have received monetary awards for being named 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools that have achieved Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act for 10 or more years.

Both Lindsey Elementary and Perry Primary schools achieved AYP for 12 years, earning $18,020 and $2,296, respectively. Pearl Stephens and Tucker elementary schools achieved AYP for 10 years, earning $14,416 and $1,530, respectively, according to a news release.

Another 16 Houston County schools also were named 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. These schools have made AYP for at least three consecutive years and received a certificate.

According to a news release, those schools are Centerville, Eagle Springs, Kings Chapel, Linwood, Miller, Morningside, Parkwood, Russell, Shirley Hills and Northside elementary schools. Also earning certificates were Huntington Middle, Warner Robins Middle, Perry Middle, Thomson Middle, Northside Middle and Warner Robins High schools.

Title I schools are those that have a significant population of economically disadvantaged students and receive federal assistance.

Six Houston schools recognized in Health Living contest

Six Houston County schools are reaping rewards from Kroger’s Healthy Living contest.

Matt Arthur, Linwood, David Perdue and Quail Run elementary schools received honorable mentions in the contest and will receive $1,500 each. Parkwood Elementary School won $500, and Russell Elementary School won $50, according to a news release.

For the contest, schools had to submit an entry that demonstrated how healthy living was exhibited throughout the school year.

Houston students make college dean’s list

North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C., named Erin Lindsey McLure from Bonaire to the Dean’s List for the fall 2011 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking a minimum of 12 hours.

Also, Alec Meddings, of Warner Robins, achieved the Dean’s List at Bethel University for fall 2011. To qualify, a traditional student must have completed 12 or more academic hours simultaneously with an average of 3.50 to 3.69 with no grade below a C.
