Leonard Floyd has been committed to his college of choice longer than any other Middle Georgia athlete.
The 6-5, 210-pound linebacker will get to officially sign with Georgia on Wednesday’s National Signing Day, nearly 10 months after he verbally committed to Georgia head coach Mark Richt.
Floyd is a two-time all-state and All-Middle Georgia selection. His signing is set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Peach County receiver/defensive back Debarriaus Miller will visit Southern Miss this weekend. Peach County head coach Chad Campbell said Central Florida also came hard after Miller late, but the senior had only one weekend left for visits.
Peach County will also have others sign Wednesday.
Quarterback Kentel Kendrick committed to Coffeyville Junior College (Kan.) recently, and linebacker Ryan Bowman committed to St. Augustine’s (N.C.).
Mount de Sales seniors John Garrett Abernathy and Myles Swain are expected to sign letters of intent Wednesday.
Swain is expected to sign with Navy. His older brother -- Chris Swain -- signed with Navy in 2011.
Abernathy is expected to become one of the first signees for the new Mercer football program.
Baldwin head coach Dexter Copeland said he expects Dante Beckham, Raheem Waller, DeAndre Thomas and Wydeleric Denson to sign with schools Wednesday.
A helping hand
A little more than a year after undergoing a heart transplant, former Warner Robins boys basketball coach Chip Malone will release a book chronicling his battle against heart disease and his fight through the transplant.
The book, “A Second Chance: Surviving a Heart Transplant,” will be unveiled on Feb. 4 at Celebrations Event Center in Warner Robins. The event runs from 4-8 p.m.
Malone plans to share his story through February’s National Heart Awareness Month.
“I don’t want what happened to me to happen to anybody,” Malone said in a news release.
More signings
FPD cross country/track runner Kenneth Reeder signed with Truett-McConnell on Thursday.
Reeder finished 10th overall at the GHSA state cross country championships in November. He helped FPD finish second as a team behind Wesleyan. Reeder made The Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia cross country team.
Veterans senior D.J. Garrett will sign a soccer scholarship with North Georgia at 11 a.m. on Feb. 8.
Garrett led the Warhawks with 27 goals as a junior. He added five assists and earned MVP honors at FPD’s Viking Cup.
Impressive showing
FPD’s Cole Wheeler finished fourth overall in his weight class at the Clinch Gear Southeastern Prep Slam at Holy Innocents’ last week.
Wheeler finish in the 145-pound weight class pushed the Vikings to a 20th place finish overall. Forty-four teams from nine states competed, including several that were nationally ranked. FPD head coach Ken Garvin said more than 20 nationally ranked wrestlers competed.
Father Ryan (Tenn.) won the meet.
