The unemployment rates for the Macon and Warner Robins metropolitan statistical areas rose slightly in December from November. However, the rate is lower in both areas when compared to the same time last year.
The preliminary unemployment rate in metro Macon was 9.6 percent in December up from 9.3 percent in November, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Labor. The jobless rate for Macon in December a year ago was 10.2 percent.
The rate increased because fewer residents were employed and because the number of jobs declined by 100, mostly in education and health services, the release stated.
The preliminary unemployment rate in metro Warner Robins was 7.3 percent in December up from 7.1 percent in November, the release stated. The jobless rate for Warner Robins in December a year ago was 7.8 percent. The number of jobs in Warner Robins also decreased by 100, mostly in state and federal government.
Metro Athens and Warner Robins had the lowest area rates in the state, while metro Dalton had the highest at 12.1 percent.
Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined in December for the third straight month, dropping to 9.7 percent from a revised 9.8 percent in November. The jobless rate was 10.4 percent in December 2010.
Jobs grew statewide in construction, manufacturing, information services and trade and transportation, the release stated.
