Scott Spivey, the show chair for the Macon Civic Club, took time from his hectic schedule of answering questions about musical numbers and dress codes to help promote the Civic Club’s 51st annual musical revue, which opens Wednesday at the Grand Opera House.

“The club is now 53 years old,” Spivey said in a recent phone interview. “We haven’t done it every year, but we’ve been doing it for a long time. This year, obviously coming off our 50th show, we had the opportunity to decide if we wanted to take the show a different direction. After a lot of brainstorming, we didn’t.”

This year’s theme is “Livin’ the Dream,” which, according to Spivey, left a lot of room for the participants to be creative.

“Last year, we had the theme of ‘Solid Gold’ and focused on No. 1 hits from all the decades that the Civic Club has been in operation. It was a lot of fun, but it was a bit limiting. This theme is wide open. We have a lot of different music this time.”

According to Spivey, there are about 150 club members and about 50 participate in the show.

“Between the members and their wives, we usually have somewhere between 100 and 150 participants. This year, attendees will get to hear everything from modern pop and Broadway, to songs from the hit show ‘Glee’ and some old classic favorites.”

“The show takes place at the Grand Opera House, which is fitting considering the show’s origins. After all, it’s why the show was originally put together. The members at the time couldn’t stomach the thought of losing the Grand and put together a review to rally people to save the theater. It worked, obviously,” Spivey said. “It’s just a great space, as much now as it was then.”

As for the show itself, Spivey laughed.

“We have some really talented singers and performers, but most of us aren’t professionals at all and we offer enthusiasm for what we may lack in talent. Besides, who doesn’t want to see their lawyer or doctor or dentist prancing around on stage with all that potential for embarrassment?”

The Macon Civic Club dedicates each of its four performances to charity.

Theatre Macon and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia will benefit from the proceeds from the Wednesday evening show. Heart of Georgia DDM and Jay’s Hope will get the proceeds from the Thursday night show. Bo’s Camp and the Andy Anderson Project will get the proceeds from the gala event and performance Feb. 3, and Central Georgia Autism and the ALS Association Georgia Chapter will benefit from the Feb. 4 show.

“The Bo’s Camp evening is particularly meaningful to our members, as it is a charity named for the son of one of our members who passed away at the age of 3,” Spivey said.

The Feb. 3 show includes a pre-show cocktail party in front of the Grand on Mulberry Street, and tickets for all the performances can be obtained at www.thegrandmacon.com.
