Country music legend Merle Haggard flew home overnight Wednesday after being treated for more than a week at The Medical Center of Central Georgia for a number of ailments.
Haggard's publicist Tresa Redburn issued this statement at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday: "Country legend Merle Haggard is now recuperating at home in Northern California."
The 74-year-old singer and song writer left Macon late Wednesday night, said Redburn, who received the news in a text message in the middle of the night.
On Friday, Haggard had convinced doctors to let him go home in his tour bus but returned a few hours later when he realized he needed further medical attention.
Tuesday, the singer credited Macon "folks" with probably saving his life after the discovery of three stomach ulcers, diverticulitis in his esophagus and eight polyps that were removed from his colon. Wednesday, the "Poet of the Common Man" was feeling well enough to dabble in a little song writing, Redburn had said.
He first fell ill on his drive from the West Coast and began canceling his performances in the South.
"The Okie from Muskogee" could not go on Jan. 17 at the Macon City Auditorium and was diagnosed with double pneumonia.
The day before he headed home, Redburn said he would be up and running in 30 days.
Haggard has scheduled a makeup concert April 25 at the auditorium.
