Eighteen students and two adults were taken to a local hospital Monday following a traffic crash involving a school bus and tractor-trailer on Gray Highway, according to a Bibb County school system spokeswoman.
The bus was carrying students, a driver and another adult to Hutchings Career Center after attending a Future Business Leaders of America tournament at Wesleyan College when the crash occurred at about 2:45 p.m., said spokeswoman Alisha Allen-Carter.
Craig Bernard Harris was driving a tractor-trailer south on Gray Highway when he swerved, unable to stop at an upcoming red light, Macon police said. The truck struck a car, also traveling southbound.
While trying to regain control of the truck, Harris swerved into the bus which was attempting to turn left onto Clinton Road, police said. The bus driver had a green turn arrow, police say.
Allen-Carter wouldn’t comment about the injuries sustained by occupants of the bus, but she said the driver was one of the adults who went to the hospital. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, according to a school system news release.
Neither Harris nor the driver of the car was treated for injuries, police said.
Harris was charged with failure to maintain lane, driving too fast for conditions and failure to obey a traffic control device, according to police.
Four lanes of Gray Highway were blocked just after 5 p.m. after a tow truck struck a pole, according to Macon police.
Power was knocked out on Gray Highway near Hall and Northern streets, according to a police news release.
