Coffee hired Robby Pruitt as its new head football coach Tuesday.
Pruitt replaces Ken Eldridge, who went 21-24 in four years.
Pruitt has coached at Fitzgerald since 2000, save for one year spent at Warner Robins in 2003. Pruitt went 120-21-1 in 11 seasons at Fitzgerald. He won 10 games or more 10 times, including the past eight years.
The Purple Hurricane lost 6-0 to Swainsboro in the 2000 championship game. They played in the semifinals in 2001 and 2009.
Pruitt went 6-4 in his only season at Warner Robins.
Pruitt won 167 games and seven state championships as a head coach in Florida.
Impressive performance
Mount de Sales’ head girls basketball coach Mia Washington picked up one of the biggest wins of her career when her Lady Cavaliers beat Arlington Christian 52-47 on Tuesday.
The win snapped Arlington’s 104-game winning streak. Arlington has won three consecutive state championships, with the most recent coming in Class AAA.
The Lady Cavaliers (15-4, 5-0 GISA Region 2-AAA) jumped out to a seven-point halftime lead by outscoring Arlington 19-9 in the second quarter. The Lady Cavaliers were only outscored by two in the second half.
Dana Rose scored 15 points to lead the Lady Cavaliers, while Maggie Midkiff added 11.
The Lady Cavaliers have won 10 straight games since starting the season 4-4.
Picking up steam
Montravius Adams can’t sign a college scholarship for 13 months, but the Dooly County junior is drawing as much, if not more, attention from college coaches than seniors who hope to sign in early February.
The 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive tackle is coming off a junior season in which he finished with 24 sacks and 44 tackles for loss. He was named the Region 4-A Player of the Year and made the AP all-state team and The Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia Team.
Adams starred in a postseason all-star game for juniors, and his recruitment has soared since.
He already had an offer from Clemson, but Adams added offers from Alabama, Auburn and Georgia shortly after the all-star game.
Adams told Rivals.com that he favors Clemson because the Tigers’ coaching staff offered him first.
Adams is one of four juniors with reported offers from BCS conference programs, joining Nigel Bowden (Central), Johnny O’Neal (West Laurens) and Demarcus Robinson (Peach County).
Old Connections
San Diego Chargers linebacker and former Washington County standout Takeo Spikes is scheduled to speak at Howard’s football banquet Feb. 9.
Howard head coach David Cape was one of Spikes’ assistant coaches in high school.
Spikes, 35, just finished his first season with the Chargers. He previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. Spikes earned All-Pro honors and earned Pro Bowl selections in 2003 and 2004 with the Bills.
Spikes was named the Associated Press All-Classification Player of the Year in 1994 during his senior year at WACO.
Perfect start
Both the Washington County boys and girls basketball teams remain undefeated with a little less than a month left in the regular season.
The WACO boys earned their most impressive win Tuesday by beating previously undefeated Burke County 49-44 in Waynesboro.
The Golden Hawks (14-0, 4-0 in 3-AAA) only have three wins decided by less than 10 points.
The Lady Hawks (15-0, 4-0) have now won 47 consecutive basketball games since the start of the 2010-11 season. No team has come within 10 points of ending the streak this season.
The Lady Hawks will face one of the best teams left on the schedule -- Cross Creek (17-2) -- on Friday in Sandersville.
