For nearly 28 minutes, Mercer was in position to have a shot at breaking its seven-game losing streak.

The Bears were a possession behind despite being outshot and outrebounded.

But just like that, Kennesaw State kicked it in gear with a 13-0 run en route to a 75-51 win Saturday afternoon over Mercer in A-Sun women’s basketball.

Mercer fell to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in A-Sun action while Kennesaw State improved to 8-10 and 3-4.

Guards Briana Williams and Precious Bridges teamed for 55 percent of the Bears’ points, Williams getting 17 points and Bridges 11, with Bridges’ points coming in the second half.

Taylor Mills led Kennesaw State’s balanced attack with 17 points to go with seven assists. Elaina Gray added 15, Kristina Wells 13 and Sametria Gideon 10.

Mercer got off to a good start, leading 14-9 after six minutes. But the Bears managed only one point in the next 4:45.

The Lady Owls took a 31-30 lead into the locker room after Mills’ 3-pointer in the final seconds.

The teams struggled through the opening minutes of the second half, and the Bears regained the lead twice.

Mercer trailed only 40-39 with 13:16 remaining in the game when Kennesaw State got rolling to take control, the Bears going scoreless for 5:01.

Offense was a major issue in the final 20 minutes, and only three Bears -- Williams, Bridges and Alesha Smith -- scored in the second half, won 44-21 by Kennesaw State.

The Bears also lost forward Ry’van Buchanan to an injury midway through the second half. She had seven points, seven rebounds and four blocks before going down.

Mercer shot only 15.6 percent in the second half and had just four assists on 15 baskets.

The Bears welcome Jacksonville on Thursday and North Florida on Saturday.
