A 34-year-old Roberta man was in critical condition at a Macon hospital Saturday after a driver in a Chevy pickup slammed into the back of his car soon after midnight Friday, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said.

The crash happened about 12:20 a.m. near 8768 Columbus Road in Lizella, just south of U.S. 80, near Hamlin Road. Derrick Smith, 34, was in a Pontiac that was rear-ended and knocked into a ditch.

Deputies said the driver of the truck that hit Smith then left the scene, but authorities later jailed 68-year-old Bobby Lee Lewis of Lizella on DUI and serious-injury-by-vehicle charges. According to public records, Lewis lives in the 8700 block of Columbus Road.
