Mercer rallies to beat Georgia Tech

DULUTH -- Junior Travis Smith made four free throws in the final minute and had a key pass that led to a big basket only moments earlier to key Mercer to a 65-59 upset Thursday night over Georgia Tech at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Mercer hadn’t beaten Georgia Tech since taking a 102-85 win in Atlanta back on Jan. 28, 1974. Thursday’s win helped erased the sour memory of the Bears having an 18-point lead in the second half in Macon only to lose 82-76 to the Yellow Jackets on Nov. 22, 2008.

Mercer trailed by seven twice in the final 8:45 and finally took the lead for good on Jake Gollon’s offensive rebound with 2:17 left.

The Bears held the Yellow Jackets to five points in the final 5:10.

Monty Brown led Mercer with 13 points. Bud Thomas chipped in with 12 points while Gollon and Daniel Coursey added 10 each. Glen Rice Jr. had 19 for Georgia Tech and Jason Morris had 10.

Mercer improved to 8-5 while Georgia Tech fell to 7-5.
