Anchor Glass said Thursday that it plans to lay off about 40 workers at its plant in Warner Robins.
The plant at 1044 Booth Road will idle one of its glass-making machines “to better align its manufacturing capacity with its customers’ needs,” Plant Manager Jerry Mills said in a statement. The company said it expects the machine to remain shut down all of next year.
The layoffs will affect about 10 percent of the plant’s workforce. Anchor Glass employs 443 people in Warner Robins, according to the Robins Regional Chamber of Commerce website.
“We are working closely with the union to manage all layoffs in accordance with our collective bargaining agreement,” Mills said. “We anticipate that the machine will be idled for 2012, but we will continue to assess our needs.”
Headquartered in Tampa, Fla., Anchor Glass Container Corp, is one of North America’s leading manufacturers of glass containers. The company operates 9 manufacturing facilities and employs about 2,900. The company, however, has been through three bankruptcies since 1996 and reportedly was looking for a buyer last year, though no sale was made.
