The family of Lauren Giddings supports Bibb County District Attorney Greg Winters’ decision to seek the death penalty against her alleged killer, Stephen McDaniel.
“It’s good to see the process moving along. ... We hope it’s over as soon as possible,” said Kaitlyn Wheeler, Giddings’ sister.
Bibb County prosecutors filed a notice of intention to seek the death penalty in McDaniel’s case Thursday morning in Bibb County Superior Court.
McDaniel, 26, was indicted Nov. 15 on one count of murder in Giddings’ June killing.
Floyd Buford, McDaniel’s lawyer, couldn’t be reached by for comment by early Thursday afternoon.
Giddings’ dismembered remains were recovered outside her Georgia Avenue apartment building June 30.
Giddings, who grew up in Laurel, Md., was last seen June 25. The 27-year-old had stayed in Macon to study for the bar exam after graduating from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in May.
McDaniel, who also graduated from Mercer’s law school in May, has been jailed since July 1.
