ATHENS - Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo met with the media after Wednesday's practice to discuss what the Bulldogs do at tailback for Saturday's game against New Mexico State.
Brandon Harton, a former walk-on, and Kyle Karempelis, still a walk-on, are in the mix. So is fullback Zander Ogletree, who saw some time at tailback in practice last year.
“And we might have a couple surprises," Bobo said. "Just gotta figure out what we can do best and work hard at it this week.”
Wes Van Dyk, a walk-on who received a scholarship in August along with Harton, isn't in the mix.
Bobo also said that four defensive players could see some action on offense: Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith have seen time there already, so they're natural candidates. But Bobo said freshmen Nick Marshall and Damian Swann could also play some offense.
Harton has carried the ball 11 times for 33 yards this year, all against Coastal Carolina. He's a redshirt sophomore who Bobo said was third-string, behind Isaiah Crowell and Richard Samuel, before spraining his ankle prior to the opener.
Karempelis ran for more than 5,000 yards in his career at Wesleyan School in Norcross, and
Harton is listed at 5-foot-6 and 174 pounds. Karempelis is 5-9, 180.
“It’s an opportunity for some guys to step up. It’s an opportunity for us to change some things up, maybe do some things different," Bobo said. "Figure out ways to move the ball. And other guys gotta step up and make plays. I feel confident in those two guys and Ogletree and the backs and tight ends we’ve got, and the receivers. We’ve got a number of things we can do to move the ball.”
Bobo also declined comment several times on the three suspended tailbacks, referring all questions to head coach Mark Richt.
