This week in HBCU Football

The SIAC race has come down to the end.  Albany State controls their own destiny.  The Rams can represent the SIAC East with wins vs. Benedict and FVSU in the final 2 games.  Morehouse is in good position if they win the 2 remaining games and Albany State loses one of the 2 remaining games.

Morehouse Tigers-   As you all know the Maroon Tigers have been my pick since the beginning.  The Tigers won on homecoming in a come from behind win 37-31 last saturday vs. Benedict.  RB David Carter turned in 111 yards and the game winning touchdown.  The Maroon Tigers are in the mix, but are in a peculiar position as they no longer control their own destiny.  Morehouse is such a quality team that I still believe even if they don't get into the conference championship game a Division II playoff game is in store.  A worst Morehouse is looking at a Pioneer Bowl bid, and they have had a very good season.

Albany State Rams-  The Rams were able to squeak by the CAU Panthers in Waycross this weekend.  The Panthers played some very good defense in holding ASU to 19 points but their offense couldn't come through in crucial times.  So Kicker Brandon Hamilton kicked 4 fgs to lead the way for ASU.  It should be noted that QB Stanley Jennings was benched in favor Fr QB Blake Schaffer.  This type of move typically doesn't bode well for a team this late in the season. Like Morehouse, I think ASU will be in the postseason this year.  If they win out, the playoffs are in store.  Even if the rams slip in the coming weeks, a playoff berth or either a Pioneer Bowl Berth is in store for the Rams.

Fort Valley State Wildcats-  The Wildcats looked like the team we thought they would be coming into the season last saturday.  FVSU drubbed Stillman 52-3 at home.  The Wildcats got it going offensively for the first time since early in the season when there were Henton to Slaughter sightings.  The Wildcats have somewhat started a youth movement and will try to build momentum for next season.

Clark Atlanta Panthers-  The Panthers of CAU have made tremendous strides this season.  While they're record isn't indicative of how well they have played defensively, the Panthers have established themselves as a contender in 2012.  The Panthers are one of the most feared defenses in all of HBCU Football.  This bodes well for CAU on the recruiting trail, and CAU has a chance to turn some heads sooner rather than later.

SSU Tigers-  The Tigers are coming off a bye week as they prepare to host the Hampton Pirates.  SSU hasn't fared well in MEAC play in their first year in the conference.  After winning the first conference game 33-30 over NC Central.  The Tigers have been drubbed in every game since.  Losing BIG to Meac opponents Howard, Morgan State and FAMU.  This is SSU's homecoming so there will be plenty to play for this upcoming weekend but I can't see how this team rallies and puts together much of an outing.  SSU has had a rough slate and it appears that things will get worse before they get better.  Nevertheless Coach Steve Davenport has done a great job there changing the culture, and he'll build a foundation at SSU for the future.
