Monday afternoon’s rainy weather played a factor in six separate car accidents that led to an 18-car pileup and 11 injuries in Monroe County, Sheriff John Cary Bittick said.

Eight to 10 deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m. on Interstate 75 southbound near mile marker 185.

Ambulances from The Medical Center of Central Georgia and Mid Georgia Ambulance were called in to assist the injured. There were no fatalities from the accidents, Bittick said.

Georgia State Patrol and Forsyth police were also on the scene.

The multiple accidents followed one initial accident and led to a traffic back-up of eight to 10 miles at one point, Sgt. Mike Maynard of the Georgia State Patrol said.

Accidents on I-75 southbound at mile marker 189 and another on Tift College Drive also happened late Monday afternoon.
