WARNER ROBINS -- South Carolina made history Monday in the Little League Southeastern Regional tournament.
But it wasn’t enough to knock off Florida.
Alex Fulmer became first girl to pitch in the regional’s history, and she went five-plus innings on the mound for South Carolina. But she suffered the loss when Florida rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-4 victory. Florida finished pool play at 3-0, while South Carolina ended up at 0-3.
“She pitched a heck of a game,” Florida manager Andy Trujeque said. “What a performance. She changed speeds and was moving the ball all over the place and hitting her spots. We try to preach that to our pitchers all the time, and she was doing it.”
But trailing 4-3 in the sixth, Florida got the first two batters on, and Fulmer was replaced by Trad Beatty.
And with the bases loaded and one out, Ethan Thomas walked to bring home the tying run. An out later, Bryce Martin singled over the head of the South Carolina right fielder for the winning run.
Florida, which finished with eight hits, advances to Wednesday’s semifinal round.
“A couple of days ago, we knew we were going to advance, and I think our boys figured out the math, and we came out a little flat,” Trujeque said. “It was close, and I couldn’t breathe. But once I caught my breath, I was proud that the boys were able to come back and get the timely hit we needed.”
