WARNER ROBINS -- Cam Stewart thought he had got the bat under the ball just a bit and felt like the center fielder would have an easy play.
He underestimated his strength just a bit.
Stewart connected for a dramatic walk-off home run with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday to give West Virginia an 8-6 victory over South Carolina in the Little League Southeastern Regional tournament.
“It was looking curveball all the way,” said Stewart, who was the clean-up batter for West Virginia. “I was pretty sure it was a harmless pop-up when I hit it. It was a pretty great feeling when I saw it was going out, because it was my first walk-off homer and this is the biggest tournament I have ever played in.
“We had to fight all day long as a team, and we never gave up. It is a good feeling knowing that we are one game away from making it to the semifinals.”
South Carolina, who was shut out in its opener against Virginia, jumped out for four runs in the first inning, with the big blow being a two-run single by Devin Shull.
The big inning knocked out West Virginia starter Michael Gaskill, who gave way to Jacob Bolander.
Bolander dominated the rest of the way. The right-hander gave up only two runs while striking out 11.
West Virginia scored one run in the second inning and four in the third to take a 5-4 lead. David McQuain had a home run in the third to get things started, and Greg Yerace and Austin Kuhn also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
South Carolina took the lead right back on a two-run single by Jordan Beatson. West Virginia then tied it at 6 on a Gaskill single that drove McQuain home.
After neither team scored in the fifth and Bolander set down South Carolina in the sixth, the stage was set for Stewart, who came through with his long homer to left center.
“Now that was just clutch,” West Virginia head coach Brent Hall said. “I told him before he went up there to cut the ball in half, wait for the curve ball and quit trying to pull anything. He didn’t get it all, but he sure got enough of it. It was a great way to win a ball game. But we wouldn’t have been so close if it wasn’t for the great job that Jacob Bolander did for us (Saturday). That was probably the best I have seen him throw.”
