Florida claims win over West Virginia

WARNER ROBINS -- Bryce Martin got Florida’s offense going early in its game with West Virginia on Friday in the Little League Southeastern Regional tournament.

Then he finished things off on the mound.

Martin hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and he came on in relief as Florida cruised to a 5-2 victory.

“Bryce has been a leader for us all year,” Florida manager Andy Trujeque said. “Everyone calls him our quarterback because he’s a football player, and he has that little something about him. He wants to be in those big spots and to come through in those spots. He wants the ball and usually comes through for us when we need him to.”

Martin did just that Friday.

He jump-started the offense with a line-drive shot over the wall in right field to also score Clayton Coringrato. Martin also walked and had a single.

On the mound, he replaced Ethan Thomas with two outs in the second inning and didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way. Thomas allowed only one hit -- a two-run home run by Michael Gaskill -- and had three strikeouts.

Martin kept the dominant pitching going with seven strikeouts in 4-1/3 innings.

“I just wanted to keep throwing strikes, get ahead with first-pitch strikes and go from there,” Martin said. “(The home run) was a fastball high and outside. I just wanted to drive it. It felt great.”

Florida’s three-run outburst in the first was key to its victory.

Aaron Guiang led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Thomas. After a walk to Coringrato, Martin gave his team its three-run advantage.

Florida then scored single runs in the fourth and sixth to pull away. In the fourth, Conor Grady led off with a single to right field and later scored when Guiang singled and the West Virginia left fielder misplayed the ball, allowing Grady come around from first to score. In the sixth, Coringrato had a double to score Thomas.

“We try to get a run early, get on top early,” Trujeque said. “That’s key for us. When we do that, we usually play well. That was huge for us.”
