Macon Police Chief Mike Burns and District Attorney Greg Winters divulged few substantive details during a news conference on the murder charge against Stephen McDaniel.

McDaniel is charged with murder in the slaying and dismemberment of his next-door neighbor and law school classmate, Lauren Giddings.

During the conference, Burns said evidence in the slaying points to one perpetrator. No date has been set for a grand jury session in the case, and there’s been no decision on the possibility of other charges against McDaniel.

Burns said more than 25 investigators had worked on the murder case during the last month, and that more than 30 people had been interviewed. He said his department was still waiting for more lab results in the case.

Before the conference, McDaniel had his first appearance before a magistrate on the murder charge. He asked for a commitment hearing in the case.

That hearing was scheduled for Aug. 17. During a commitment hearing, prosecutors typically present more details of the case against a defendant to a judge.

Police found Giddings’ torso in a trash bin outside her apartment June 30.

At the Barristers Hall apartments Wednesday afternoon, Macon police crime scene investigators were on hand as well as a search dog and handler that Giddings’ family has hired.
