A planned renovation of an existing gas station in downtown Macon would provide “a higher-end market with take-out food,” the interior designer for the project said.

The gas station and convenience store is planned at 301 Walnut St. at the northwest intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved Monday a certificate of appropriateness and a variance in parking requirements for the renovation project.

Plans include demolishing two of three existing buildings on the .3-acre site and two existing gas canopies, making façade changes to the remaining structure that faces Walnut Street.

The 2,800-square-foot convenience store would have 2,400 square feet of sales space, interior designer Terry Holland said. Also, a 25-foot-by-60-foot canopy will replace the two existing gas canopies.
