A veteran Macon police officer was suspended Monday after he was arrested and charged with DUI and speeding by the Georgia State Patrol, according to a Macon Police Department news release.

Officer Donald Lee Johnson Jr., who has been on the Macon force for nearly seven years, was pulled over during a traffic stop about 2 a.m. Sunday morning on Interstate 75 near the Hardeman Avenue exit, police spokeswoman Jami Gaudet said.

Johnson was taken to the Bibb County jail and released a few hours later on a bail bond of $2,500.

He has been suspended for five days pending termination, she said.

Georgia State Patrol officials said Monday that the incident report from the arrest hasn’t been completed.

Gaudet said Johnson, who has no previous record of disciplinary actions, hasn’t yet had a hearing. She said Police Chief Mike Burns wouldn’t be issuing a statement in the case.

Efforts to reach Johnson for comment Monday were not successful.
