Macon police on Friday arrested Dennis Richard Green, 37, of Crandall, and charged him with theft by taking auto, reckless driving and eluding police, a news release said.

He is also facing charges from the Georgia State Patrol, including driving under the influence and failure to maintain his lane.

According to the release, an off-duty Macon police officer spotted Green taking the ambulance while it was parked outside a doctor’s office on Hemlock Street at 2:04 p.m.

Macon police followed the ambulance onto Interstate 75 north before exiting at Bass Road, starting and stopping several times. The driver got back onto the interstate and while attempting to turn off at Exit 185, lost control of the ambulance and flipped it, the release said.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and Georgia State Patrol officers continued the pursuit on foot, finally catching him in some nearby woods near a ravine.
