Hewitt back in the tournament ... sort of

Paul Hewitt is back to talking the X's and O's of college basketball.

His return didn't take long.

After being fired by Georgia Tech last Saturday following an 11-year tenure that included his own multiple trips to the NCAA tournament, the former head coach is talking about this year's tournament on the airwaves.

During CBS Sports' and Turner Sports' coverage Thursday of the second round of the tournament, Hewitt was part of the CBS College Sports Network studio team. He sat behind the desk in the New York studio as an analyst, helping break down the day's games. He added perspective and insight to what various wins and losses must have to meant respective coaches.

He even flashed a little humor.

During one late-night session of recapping games, his recent coaching dramas arose. As his studio team discussed Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson's emotional breakdown following a 59-57 Tigers loss to Kentucky in the closing seconds, Hewitt opined about how refreshing it was to see a coach's tears. It was a good thing, he said, because people often don't often see how much coaches put into a program.

His fellow analysts chuckled, saying he was all too familiar with being misunderstood by fan bases.

Hewitt's firing came at the end of a two-season stretch that was marked by constant calls for his ouster.

This time last season, Hewitt was in the tournament as a coach, leading the Yellow Jackets into a first-weekend game against Oklahoma State. Beating the Cowboys, they advanced into the second round, where they lost to Ohio State.

In a phone conversation with The Telegraph on Saturday, Hewitt mentioned potentially taking a break from coaching in the coming months. The analyst work could give him the perfect one-foot-in, one-foot-out break from the game in the coming years.

The 1985 St. John Fisher (N.Y.) graduate was a Journalism major.

The CBS College Sports Network can be found on Channel 613 on DirecTV.
