Georgia Tech on Saturday fired head men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt.
Reached by phone, Hewitt told The Telegraph that met with athletic director Dan Radakovich earlier in the day. He declined to go too far into discussing details of the meeting, deferring further comment to Georgia Tech officials.
Georgia Tech officials are expected to make the official announcement in the coming days — if not sooner.
Hewitt said he “was not necessarily surprised” by the news.
“In this business, you come to expect anything,” Hewitt said.
Long the subject of rumor and intrigue about his job status, Hewitt’s ouster was all but a foregone conclusion after the Yellow Jackets lost to Virginia Tech xx-xx in the opening round of the ACC tournament Thursday.
The loss wrapped up a 13-18 season for them, giving the Yellow Jackets their third losing record in four seasons.
“If anything, I’m disappointed in myself knowing that I wasn’t able to reverse the trend,” he said, citing the program’s on-court decline since it advanced to the NCAA tournament title game in 2004. The Yellow Jackets made the tournament just three times after, posting losing seasons four additional times.
Hewitt just finished his 11th season coaching the Yellow Jackets. In that time, he compiled a 190-162 record. In ACC games, he was 72-105.
Georgia Tech now owes Hewitt $7.2 million in a buyout that will have to be paid over the next few seasons. School officials are expected to discuss those details when their official announcement comes.
