A correctional officer was assaulted by several inmates in a riot Sunday night at the Eastman Youth Development Center.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office and Eastman police joined law enforcement officers from Wilcox County, Abbeville Police and Middle Georgia College police who were called to assist when more than 60 inmates in two dormitories refused to return to their cells at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Dodge County Sheriff's Office.

By 9 p.m., the officers physically returned the inmates to their cells after bed linens and trash were set ablaze in several locations.

The Eastman Fire Department and Dodge County EMS also responded to the incident.

The Eastman YDC is the state's only Level 5 Security facility and was the scene of another riot last May, the release stated.
