Jimmy Carter may have felt lust in his heart when he was running for president, but Bibb County commissioners are feeling that there’s entirely too much lust on a particular dirt road.

County commissioners said Tuesday that they would ask residents who live on and near Lustful Court to consider a petition to change the name. The road, a few links from Jeffersonville Road in east Bibb County, dates back at least four decades.

County Commissioner Lonzy Edwards, a minister who represents the area, said he’s gotten several complaints about the road name.

“Lots of improper behavior occurs all over, everywhere, but to encourage it, seem to condone it with a name like that?” he said.

Edwards asked other commissioners to picture residents introducing themselves.

“Well, I live on Lustful Court,” he said.

Don Tussing, the principal planner with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission, said road names are picked by developers, who often name them after children or pets. Tussing agreed that “lustful” probably wasn’t a child’s name.

The oldest house on the street was built in 1969. No one seemed to know why the name was picked all those years ago.

Commissioners said they would encourage residents to sign a petition to change the name, which would be returned to the commissioners to consider.

Ultimately, a name change could help in other ways, too. County taxpayers have replaced the Lustful Court street sign a number of times.
