Four dogs killed several animals in Fort Valley State University’s “Life on the Farm” traveling exhibit, according to one of the school’s administrators.

The dogs, which were believed to come from a neighborhood near the university, somehow managed to get past a woven electric fence that guarded the animals at the Agricultural Research Station on campus, said Will Getz, interim program leader for agriculture and natural resources in the school’s cooperative extension program.

As a result, two goats, two adult sheep and one spring lamb were killed in an attack either Thursday night or early Friday morning. The dogs were spotted in the area after the attack, Getz said.

“Life on the Farm,” run through the extension program, brings the animals to schools, libraries and other locations to help people understand various aspects of food and fiber production, Getz said.

The animals were housed in an area with frequent visitors, and in recent years, Getz said, he has seen an increase of dogs turned loose in the area.

“Some pet owners need to be a little bit more responsible about keeping track of where their animals are,” he said.

A cow that was part of the exhibit also sustained bite wounds to its legs but no serious injuries, and a dozen or so chickens were not affected.

The farm animals were valued at several thousand dollars, and “for us, it represents a loss,” Getz said.
