The Macon Economic Development Commission and the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority say they will make a “major economic development announcement” Friday.
The invitation e-mailed to Chamber of Commerce members does not give details, only that state and local officials will be on hand.
Meanwhile, the industrial authority met Wednesday in a called meeting and took substantial steps toward luring “Project Q,” a $35 million manufacturing and distribution facility that would be built on Avondale Mill Road.
Industrial authority officials would not say whether Friday’s announcement concerns Project Q.
Following a 45-minute closed session to discuss the “possible future acquisition of real estate,” the authority awarded a $428,000 contract for roadway and utility improvements at the Project Q site. The authority then voted to approve a financial analysis of “the company” as a contingency for the work.
Mayor Robert Reichert made the motion to approve the review of “Project Q based on financial reports that we received and other information we considered in closed session.”
Project Q has been described by local officials as a company that plans to develop a 1 million-square-foot facility on Avondale Mill Road and create 350 jobs. A state filing shows that construction could start in 2011 and be completed in 2013. Local taxing agencies already have approved tax abatement schedules for Project Q.
Prospective companies are given code names, such as Project Q, during negotiations.
