A man believed to have a shotgun held hostage five people including a 1-year-old infant for at least four-and-a-half hours early Friday at 4306 Marion Avenue in Macon.
At about 7 a.m., officers stormed the home and brought the hostages to safety. They arrested 21-year-old Corted Tharpe, according to a news release from the Macon Police Department.
Tharpe had an outstanding warrant against him for family violence that was taken out Thursday, said Macon police Maj. Robert Grabowski.
Dispatchers received a call at 2:22 a.m. that a man had barricaded himself inside the Lynmore Estates home with the baby, two men aged 18 and 23 and two women aged 19 and 20, the release stated.
Negotiators gave Tharpe a two-way phone, but he refused to cooperate, Grabowski said.
"We deemed it necessary to try to establish communication through our hostage negotiation team that went on for over an hour," Grabowski said. "The suspect became actively aggressive toward police. It was determined he wasn't going to do any talking with the negotiators and at one point the SWAT team saw an opportunity to move in."
Tharpe continued to be confrontational after his arrest and was kicking violently while handcuffed inside the patrol car.
Investigators believe Tharpe had a relationship with one of the women in the house, but it is initially unclear how the rest of the hostages are related, Grabowski said.
The SWAT team was dispatched shortly after 3 a.m. and the situation was successfully resolved less than four hours later.
"This is what the SWAT team trains for, the hostage negotiation team trains for," Grabowski said. "This, in our opinion, the perfect outcome. No officers got hurt, no hostages got hurt and the suspect didn't get hurt."
Officers set up a perimeter to keep neighbors safe in the old Peach Orchard neighborhood off Broadway.
Police will further discuss this case and other recent violent incident in a news conference Friday afternoon.
