GOP headquarters in Bibb vandalized

Someone in Bibb County apparently wasn’t very happy with Tuesday night’s election results and was willing to break things to prove it.

An unknown vandal smashed in the metal sign to the Bibb County Republican headquarters at 2720 Riverside Drive late Tuesday night and ripped up dozens more yard signs for Republican candidates, according to Macon police. Several anti-SPLOST signs also were stolen.

The main sign to the building, valued at about $550, appeared to have been bashed in by a wooden stake.

“Because the sign was worth more than $500, that makes this crime a felony,” Macon police spokeswoman Jami Gaudet said.

The shredded yard signs, which belonged to GOP candidates such as John Oxendine, Karen Handel and Max Wood — appeared to have been cut with a box cutter and spread across the building’s front lawn and the edge of the street.

Paul Rish, chairman of the Bibb County Republican Party, said a volunteer driving past the building called to alert him of the damages about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Rish said he suspects the crime was politically motivated. He said the party may have been targeted because of its outspoken opposition to the 1 percent sales tax struck down by voters in Tuesday’s election.

“We campaigned pretty strong against the SPLOST, and whoever did this might have been angry at us,” Rish said.

“My initial reaction was anger, but I want to let whoever did this know that if they were trying to intimidate us, it’s only made us stronger,” Rish said.

Macon police are investigating the vandalism. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 751-7500 or Macon Regional CrimeStoppers at (877) 68-CRIME.
