WARNER ROBINS — Perry police are investigating the processing of mammograms at Perry Hospital that were not read by a radiologist, authorities said Wednesday.

The discovery during an internal quality check resulted in a call issued by Houston Healthcare for 900 mammograms to be redone. This impacted patients who had mammograms at Perry Hospital in 2009 and early 2010. Perry Hospital is a part of Houston Healthcare.

Perry Police Chief George Potter said Michael Gray, a Perry attorney representing the hospital, requested the investigation.

The investigation will be geared to determine whether any criminal activity occurred, and the findings will be forwarded to the Houston County District Attorney’s Office, Potter said.

Potter said he expects the investigation may take three to four weeks.

Houston County District Attorney Jason Ashford said his office will review the findings and then make a determination whether to present the case to a grand jury.

Victor Moldovan, an Atlanta attorney representing Houston Healthcare, said the health-care system requested the investigation through Gray.

The employee, whose name has not been released, was caught in a quality review in April when discrepancies were found in a report, Moldovan said.

The employee logged onto a computer system using a doctor’s identification number and signed off on the mammogram as if the employee was the doctor, Moldovan said. The employee was terminated, he said.
