ACADEMIC CAMPS

MidSummer Macon

Joshua House Summer Enrichment Camp

7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday; camp starts June 1 and will continue for six weeks. The goals of this summer camp include increasing the pass rate of students on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests; Georgia High School Graduation Tests; End of Course Tests; and the Georgia Writing Test; and increasing academic achievement in reading, math, social studies, science and technology, study skills, character building and test preparation. The camp was developed and designed by certified reading and math specialists and is aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards and the new CORE standards. The specialist will individually assess the academic needs of each student and plan instruction that will specifically address their academic difficulties. Campers also will participate in Student Choice Boards and enrichment. Camp director is Nancy Fordé, kindergarten through fifth literacy specialist. For campers ages 5-13. Sylvan Learning Centers Summer Academic Camps

Summer Kids University

9 a.m.-3 p.m. (before-care will begin at 7 a.m. and after-care will continue until 6 p.m. at an additional cost), weekdays June 1-July 16, Fort Valley State University Warner Robins center. Basketball, tennis, wrestling, math, science, Spanish, computing, art and drama courses. New courses include robotics, speech and debate, college skills and princess and gentleman’s academies. Designed to help students in kindergarten-12th grade develop athletic, academic and social skills throughout the summer. Students and their parents can choose up to four classes from a changing lineup each week. There will be a mandatory parent orientation 10 a.m. May 22 at the Warner Robins center. Viking Read-Write Workshop

9 a.m.-noon, July 12-16, First Presbyterian Day School’s high school building, 5671 Calvin Drive. The “Read-Write” workshop uses the Linda Mood-Bell approach to strengthen reading comprehension and language expression skills through developing imagery and visualization. Students will learn speed reading skills and note-taking skills and will work on vocabulary. They will learn three major writing styles: creative narrative, persuasive essay (SAT), and expository. SPECTACLES Math and Science Resident Camps

Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road. Offers activities designed to encourage middle school girls to see science and math in new ways. Camps include field trips, experiments and projects using the college’s new state-of-the-art science laboratories and computer facilities. Georgia College & State University Science Camp and Science Camp Jr.

8 a.m.-5 p.m. Lake Laurel Cabin at Georgia College (unless otherwise noted). Georgia College & State University’s ninth annual all-science academic camp. Each week of science at Lake Laurel Biological Field Station will feature hands-on and outdoor activities presented by camp counselors, Georgia College faculty, area scientists and local community members. In addition, campers will be assisted by some of the finest undergraduate students at Georgia College. Swim time will be included each Thursday. — The Robert McDuffie & Friends Festival for Strings: Sept. 2-6. The festival is an exceptional opportunity for outstanding high school string musicians to study with an elite group of concert artists in a strings immersion workshop. This intense music festival is limited to high school juniors and seniors and is designed for those string musicians who have demonstrated exceptional talent and skill. Only eight violinists, four cellists and four violists will be selected. All students accepted to the festival will receive a full scholarship, covering tuition, housing and meals. Center for the Arts Academy Summer Intensive

June 6-12, Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road. One-week resident immersion program for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program is designed specifically for high school students to study, create and perform in studio art, music or theater. — Watercolor Painting with Berry Smith: 9 a.m.-noon June 7-11. This summer art camp focuses on painting with watercolor and the various techniques used in creating great works of art. Some drawing also will be taught. For ages 8-12. $65.

— Tiny ACT with Ruby Werts: June 14-18. Children will have the opportunity to experience acting, moving, singing, dancing and playing instruments. This camp will expose young children to fun and games, using ribbon sticks, scarves, costumes, musical instruments and lots of movement games. Session I: 10:30 a.m.-noon, for ages 3-4. $20; Session II: 1:30-3:30 p.m. For ages 5-6. $20.

— Cartooning with Tim Oliphant: 9-11:30 a.m. June 21-25. This camp is designed to encourage children to be creative, not only in drawing humorous illustrations, but to think as well. The students create their own cartoons (this is not drawing already famous characters.) Oliphant has done daily comic strips, editorial cartoons, humorous illustrations for advertising agencies and magazines. Supplies are included in the registration fee. For ages 6-9. $70.

— Humorous Illustrations with Tim Oliphant: 1-3:30 p.m. June 21-25. During this camp, students will learn the professional techniques used in creating cartoons and humorous illustrations. Using basic drawing fundamentals as well as color blending and composition, students learn how to come up with gag cartoon ideas and various pen techniques. For ages 10 and up. $70.

— Drawing with Pam Daresta: 9 a.m.-noon June 28-July 2. Children’s drawing for those who love to draw with pencils, charcoal, chalks in color and black on white, we will draw creatures from our imagination, insects larger than life, and some of nature’s beauty found outside the studio door. For ages 6-9. $75.

— Printmaking with Pam Daresta: 1-3:30 p.m. June 28-July 2. Printmaking for students will turn favorite drawing subjects into intaglio, relief and mono printing works of art. Each process uses different materials and produces varied image qualities. All materials will be nontoxic and water based. Supplies will be provided. For ages 10 and up. $75.

— Theatre Sampler with Ruby Werts: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. July 12-16. A week of theater games, improvisations and humorous skits under the direction of Ruby Werts. Students will learn theater skills and skits, monologues and theater games and develop them into a full scale production. This camp will conclude with a staged production on July 16. For ages 6 and up. $65; students should bring a sack lunch.

— Digital Photography sponsored by Allied Arts and Digital Bridges: July 19-23. Macon artist Rudy Mendes returns this summer for this beginning digital photography class. Students will learn how to make great pictures, learn art fundamentals including color, composition, and design principals. Digital Bridges will provide software and computers to manipulate, edit and print campers’ best images. Camp includes supervised photo shoots around downtown Milledgeville and an end-of-camp slide presentation and student exhibition. All equipment and supplies provided. Session I: 9 a.m.-noon. — Adult Landscape Watercolor Workshop with Berry Smith: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. May 8. Join watercolor artist Berry Smith as he leads you through a landscape painting. Learn basic composition, color and watercolor techniques used in creating a painting. Smith will explain and demonstrate different techniques used to paint realistic looking scenes. This class is designed for any skill level and Smith will work with each student. Every student will finish a painting during the workshop. A supply list is available. $50.

— Adult Drawing Workshop with Tim Oliphant: 6-8 p.m. June 22 and 24. Oliphant has been a professional cartoonist since 1983, producing caricatures, daily comic strips, self-syndicated editorial cartoons and freelance humorous illustrations. His simple approach to teaching the fundamentals of drawing is based on just four basic shapes, perspective and line. $50.

— Adult Watercolor Landscape painting with Pam Daresta: 5:30-7 p.m. June 28-July 1. Adult Introductory Watercolor class will introduce landscape design techniques which will include drawing and painting. Will work on site at various locations around downtown Milledgeville. Students will use the rich architectural and historical backdrop of Milledgeville as inspiration for their landscape paintings. Beginners are welcome. $70.

Stageworks-Kidz Tech Theatre Camp

9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 1-July 9, The Douglass Theatre. Designed to educate, stimulate and inspire the minds of youth. It introduces them to the realities of being an onstage performer as well as a behind-the-scenes technician in the entertainment industry. The program also explains the roles of a producer, director, playwright, production manager, stage manager, road manager, lighting and sound designer. The program introduces scriptwriting and creative writing, directing, producing, acting, lighting and sound technology, music programming, set design and construction and more. At the end of the camp, the students will create their own production, including lighting, sound, acting and dance. Otis Redding Singer/Songwriter Camp

During the program, campers ages 13-17 will participate in fundamentals of songwriting classes, lyric-writing exercises, instrumental accompaniment instruction, vocal workshop with Jan Smith, “Drumming for Success” workshop, Platinum Studio recording workshop, overview of Georgia singer/songwriters, including Otis Redding, performances and question-and-answer sessions with Georgia singer/songwriters. The Otis Redding Singer/Songwriter Camp is intended for students with varied musical knowledge. No previous experience musical experience is required; students at all levels are encouraged to attend. LEAP CAMP 2010!

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road. Children may register for both sessions. LEAP 2010! is an educational enrichment program designed to provide at-risk youth an opportunity to have fun in a safe and nurturing environment. LEAP activities are designed to keep children interested and excited about enhancing their educational and leadership skills. Group activities, educational opportunities and cultural arts experiences are designed to actively engage children and increase their exposure to various aspects of leadership, education, arts and more. Participants will receive one hour of math and reading instruction each day. Specially designed curriculum utilizing the Georgia Performance Standards focuses on strengthening test-taking skills and will help children prepare for required competency exams next spring. National Fishing Month

8-11 a.m. or 1-4 p.m., Monday-Saturday during the month of June, Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, Perry. The Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority invites organized groups of children (minimum of 10 per group) to fish in one of the Agricenter’s lakes that has been stocked with catfish and will be available on a reservation only basis. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability. Organized groups include Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, churches, schools, civic clubs, etc. Group sponsors/chaperones are to follow these guidelines: bring a group of at least 10 children, supervise and assist the group, and provide all fishing gear and bait. Rest room facilities and picnic tables are located near the lake. Fishing is open to children only up to 16 years of age. The Agricenter encourages groups to practice “catch and release” so that others may have an enjoyable experience, too. However, each child is permitted to take home up to four fish. Teen Scene Youth Center’s Summer Camp: “Expressin’ Your Swag”

June 7-July 16, Teen Scene Youth Center, 129 First St. The camp will teach children how to express themselves positively through music, poetry, creative writing, debating, the media and dance. — Beginner Camp: 9 a.m.-noon. Designed to give boys a foundation on which to build their wrestling skills. Basic moves such as stance and escapes as well as pinning combinations will be taught. This will be a controlled camp with some live wrestling. Pairing will be age and weight specific. For first-seventh. $85.

— Intense Camp: 1-4 p.m. Designed to cover all major areas needed to be fundamentally sound on the mat. There will have several guest coaches (some head and assistant coaches in the Middle Georgia area) who will target specific instruction during their day at the camp (i.e., leg rides, top moves, bottom moves, leg attacks and throws). Live wrestling daily in which wrestlers will be allowed to work on moves learned that day. For eighth and above. $100.

Viking Tennis Camp

St. Peter Claver Middle Grades Soccer Camp

Drop-off as early as 8 a.m.; pick-up by 4:30 p.m. July 12-July 16, St. Peter Claver Catholic School, 133 Ward St. The camp will focus on fitness and basic soccer skills. Mercer Boys Soccer Academy: Boys and Girls

July 12-16, CGSA Field, 110 Snellgrove Drive, Warner Robins. The Mercer Boys Soccer Academy teaches young players soccer through the game. The staff will help campers improve individual technique along with tactical awareness of the game through various activities of small-sided and full-sided games. Special emphasis on the total development of the player, teaching training methods that can be practiced at home, while also having fun. Soccer Day Camp

9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 26-July 29, pick up and drop off each day will be at the Porter Gymnasium, Wesleyan College, 4760 Forsyth Road. The camp is designed to continue to shape young players’ technical and tactical ability. The camp will be taught by college level coaches and experienced players. For girls and boys ages 10-17. The typical daily schedule will include technical/tactical session (9-11:30 a.m.), lunch/video/discussion (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.), competitive games (1-3 p.m.), and pool games (3-4 p.m.). For more information, call Michael Spivey at 757-5255. $180 ($50 for just one day) per player, which includes instruction, supervision, use of Wesleyan athletic facilities (soccer fields/pool), lifeguard, lunch on campus and T-shirt. An early registration discount of 5 percent (four-day camp only) is offered for those who register with payment by June 30.
