Bibb County schools had 60 volunteers for their Nov. 19 Educator for a Day program, which allows a businessperson to walk in the shoes of a school administrator for a day.
Bridgette Moten, director of marketing for Geotechnical and Environmental Consultants Inc. and a member of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce’s education committee, gave an update on the program to the school board at a recent meeting.
The 60 volunteers rated their visit on a scale of 1-7, with 7 the highest. Moten said more than half of the volunteers rated their day a 7 and no volunteers gave below a 5, she said.
Responses from volunteers ranged from “didn’t realize how much technology the system has” to “more businesses need to volunteer in the public schools.”
St. Joseph’s teacher, student honored
A St. Joseph’s Catholic School teacher and student received national and regional awards, according to the Macon private school.
Teacher Tina Viviani McGoldrick was awarded the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award for the National Catholic Education Association for the South Atlantic States region, according to a news release.
McGoldrick, who has worked 30 years at St. Joseph’s, was nominated for her work in the private school’s Student Success Center. That center serves children who need help outside of the conventional classroom setting.
“Our Catholic school, like most in our diocese, has never had the resources to educate our at-risk students,” McGoldrick said. “As a classroom teacher, I felt this more year after year, as students who needed more academic assistance than I could possibly give them entered and left my classroom without all the basic skills they needed to be academically successful.”
McGoldrick and school administrators secured a $240,000 grant to fund the center, which opened in 2007.
St. Joseph’s student Kaylie Kimsey was also a regional finalist in the Publix design a bag contest. Kimsey received a $25 gift card to Publix and a gift card for $100 to be used for a celebration for her classroom.
Bibb County accepting pre-K applications
The Bibb County school system is taking applications for pre-kindergarten slots this month at various school locations. In order to register for the Bibb County pre-k slots for the 2010-2011 school year, children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1.
Parents may only apply for their child to attend pre-k in the school zone in which they live, except Alexander II, Burdell-Hunt and Vineville Academy, which are magnet schools. Parents countywide may also apply for pre-K classes at Northwoods Academy on Pierce Avenue.
Parents will be notified by mail of their child’s acceptance or waiting list placement by March 12.

Perry teacher earns middle school honor
A Perry Middle School teacher has been recognized as the 2010 Middle Grades Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Council of Teachers of English.
Kylie Ray, who teaches language arts, will be honored at a luncheon hosted by the organization Friday at Callaway Gardens. Ray will receive $250, a plaque and mention in the group’s publications.
“Teaching middle school students is my passion and my life’s calling,” Ray said in a news release. “It is deeply humbling to be recognized by my colleagues for doing what I love.”
Georgia Virtual School accepting registrations
Registration for the state-run Georgia Virtual School is now open to public school students who want to take an online class in the 2010-11 school year.
Georgia Virtual School offers Advanced Placement and college prep level courses ranging from Chinese, Japanese, Latin or AP Trigonometry. The courses are a solution for students who are homebound or working in an alternative school environment and can help students who need credit recovery, state officials said in a news release.
More than 3,000 students successfully completed virtual school courses during the fall semester, state officials said.

Matt Arthur Elementary principal honored by peers
Matt Arthur Elementary School principal Jolie Hardin was named as this year’s Georgia Distinguished Principal for District 11, a distinction from the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals.
The principals honored in each of Georgia’s 16 districts are nominated by their peers.
To receive the award, nominees must be a principal for at least five years and be an active principal the year the award is received, as well as be an active member of GAESP and the National Association of Elementary School Principals for two consecutive years, including the current year.
“I am humbled by this award. Knowing the quality of principals in District 11, I am extremely honored by their recognition,” said Hardin in a news release.
Another round of H1N1 vaccines for Houston
Houston County schools will offer another round of H1N1 vaccines during the last week of February at its primary and elementary schools for children under 10. According to a news release, the Centers for Disease Control says this age group should receive two rounds of the vaccine.
The system will also provide H1N1 vaccines at its high schools next month.
So far, 3,700 free H1N1 vaccines have been given at Houston County schools.
Northside teacher’s art included in Atlanta exhibit
The artwork of Northside High School teacher John Masters is featured in an exhibit hosted by the Art Institute of Atlanta.
The exhibit, called “The Appreciation Show,” includes paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculptures and photographs by high school art educators and will be on display through Feb. 27.
Fort Valley State hosting small business expo
Fort Valley State University will host its third annual Small Business Financial Expo Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pettigrew Center.
Terri Denison, district director for Georgia’s U.S. Small Business Adminsitration, will be the event’s speaker. Several organizations, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Development and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs will have presentations.
