The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission plans to consider again Monday a permit for a mixed-use senior retirement community in east Bibb County.
A conditional-use permit is being sought for about 12 acres at 2730 Masseyville Road near Lakeshore Drive to allow a mixed-use senior retirement community, called Charlotte’s Beach, with variances in the distance between the structures and parking requirements.
The property was rezoned in June from a multi-family residential district to a planned development extraordinary district.
A decision on the conditional-use permit was deferred at the Jan. 11 meeting to allow the applicant, Cunningham & Co., time to provide the final building design.
The retirement development would have 217 units in three multi-family buildings and 30 individual lakeside cottages, according to the commission’s staff report. The property, which would be gated, includes a 7-acre lake. Monthly rental prices are expected to range from $450 to $650 per unit.
At the January meeting, one commissioner questioned the appearance of the small cottages which, at about 600 square feet, looked similar to mobile homes. Pam Young, the development’s project coordinator, said then the cottages would not be manufactured homes but would be built on site.
Other commissioners said the multi-family buildings looked stark and industrial. Young said it was hard to make large buildings not look industrial, but that she was willing to consider suggestions.
The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at Macon City Hall, 700 Poplar St.
