CENTERVILLE — City Council raised the cost of alcohol special event permits Tuesday, aligning itself more closely with fees in Warner Robins and across Middle Georgia.

Voting unanimously, the council acted to raise beer and wine off-premise fees from $300 to $500, and catered event fees from $35 to $300. Though the increase goes into effect immediately, current license holders will not be charged the new amount until their license is up for renewal, according to City Attorney Rebecca Tydings. The permit for catered events is a per event fee and will be charged immediately.

Tydings also explained the fee restructuring is being done in order to be part of the re-codification of the city’s code of ordinances, which is in its final stages.

In other business, council members approved a planning retreat for themselves April 1-2 at Lake Blackshear near Cordele. The event will be the second such retreat in as many years and will cost $5,460. It will be led by Walt McBride of the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute.

Mayor John Harley said such sessions are a benefit to the city, especially in light of decisions being reached and handed down from this year’s gathering of the Georgia General Assembly.
