WARNER ROBINS — A Texas man is accused of vehicular homicide in a hit and run in Perry on Thursday morning that claimed the life of a Michigan woman, police said.

Luis Lopez Guzman Jr., 50, of San Antonio, also was charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He faces several traffic-related offenses, said Houston County sheriff’s Capt. Robert West.

Janice Hanes, 65, of Fenwick, Mich., was pronounced dead at Perry hospital, West said. Her husband, Murray Hanes, 66, was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center of Georgia in Macon with head injuries, West said. Murray Hanes was listed in stable condition Thursday at the Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The crash happened about 5:42 p.m. Wednesday on Sam Nunn Blvd. at Exit 136, West said.

Guzman was driving a 2000 Kenworth tractor-trailer off an Interstate 75 exit ramp, ran a red light at Sam Nunn Boulevard and hit the passenger side of a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Murray Hines, West said.

Guzman then fled the scene and was pulled over by Perry police headed south on I-75, West said.

Guzman was being held at the Houston County jail in Perry.
