A Cochran man was charged with murder Tuesday in the death of his girlfriend's 15-month-old daughter.

Qweon Grant, 22, is being held in the Bleckley County Jail after an autopsy showed the girl was strangled, according to a news release from the Cochran Police Department.

"The autopsy found internal bruising on the neck," said Key McGuire, interim police chief.

Cochran police and emergency personnel responded shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday to a call of an unresponsive baby.

"When they arrived the momma was in the door holding the lifeless baby," McGuire said. "They tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the hospital."

Investigators have determined the girl wanted to wake up her mother late Monday night but Grant told the child to let the woman sleep so the toddler started crying, McGuire said.

He took her into the living room and the crying stopped. Two hours later Grant woke the mother to tell her the baby was not breathing, McGuire said.

McGuire credited the GBI and his officers for bringing about such a quick arrest.

"It's gratifying to see the case come together so quickly, but it's horrible," McGuire said.

Grant never gave the mother any indication he was anything but a loving father-figure for the child whom he helped raise for about year, McGuire said.
