Handgun classes being offered
WARNER ROBINS — Basic handgun classes are being offered by Warner Robins police in January.
The classes, which are separate for men and for women, are designed for people who have little or no experience with handguns, according to a Warner Robins police news release.
Those who take the classes are required to attend all three sessions, the release stated.
Each participant is required to bring a handgun of good quality and proper caliber, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection.
The women’s sessions are from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 19 and Jan. 21, and from 8 a.m.-noon Jan. 23, according to the release. The men’s sessions are from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 25 and Jan. 27, and from 8 a.m.-noon Jan. 30.

Section of Old Perry Road closed until Sunday
WARNER ROBINS — A section of Old Perry Road from Bellwood Drive to just north of the entrance to Morgan Ranch subdivision will be closed until Sunday.
Tommy Stalnaker, director of operations for Houston County, said the road closure is required for construction work that is part of the second phase of the $1.2 million widening of Old Perry Road.
The second phase of the widening is from Bellwood Drive to Woodard Road, he said.
Crews are putting in three lines of 36-inch storm drainage pipe under a 16-inch water pipe, Stalnaker said.
A signed detour is in place. The detour follows Woodard Road, Moody Road and then Ga. 96.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and obey construction signs when traveling through the area.
Desjardins to speak at Air Force Association luncheon
WARNER ROBINS — Maj. Gen. Susan Desjardins will speak at the Air Force Association Carl Vinson Memorial Chapter 296 luncheon Jan. 13.
Desjardins is the director of strategic planning, requirements and programs, Headquarters Air Mobility Command, according to a news release.
The event will be held at noon at the Horizons Club Ballroom at Robins Air Force Base. Reservations are required and can be made no later than Jan. 8 by contacting Regina McGill at regina.mcgill@dla.mil or 327-9238.
The mission of the Air Force Association is to advocate for aerospace power and to support the Air Force, the Air Force family and aerospace education.
Lowe’s helps landscape Warner Robins Middle
WARNER ROBINS — The two Warner Robins Lowe’s Home Improvement stores recently teamed up to improve landscaping at Warner Robins Middle School.
The stores donated trees and shrubs valued at $5,000 to beautify the campus’ main entrance, softball and baseball fields, and back property line, according to a news release. Scotts and the Flowerwood Nursery co-sponsored the project.
Nearly 40 Lowe’s employees and their families also helped school faculty members and students plant the greenery. About 15 faculty members and students volunteered, the release stated.
